| Centre
of pilgrimage for millions of people every year who seek a miracle cure
from the healing spring waters of Lourdes. The story of Bernadette, the
young girl who had a vision which led to the discovery of the spring in
1858 is well documented and The Musee de Notre Dame de Lourdes has mementos
of Bernadette and evidence of miraculous cures, the town also has numerous
souvenir and gift shops. Lourdes is impressively situated at the foot of the Pyrenees and offers a selection of routes up into the mountains. An excellent starting and finishing point for a tour of the High Pyrenees and the challenge of the classic climbs used by the Tour de France. Those looking for something a little gentler may enjoy exploring the Pyrenean foothills to the North of Lourdes. Generally this is an area of steep climbs and exhilarating descents where low gears are recommended. |
